AGING | New statistics shows that more Americans over the age of 55 are employed than ever before. Not surprisingly, this is largely credited to worries among older adults that they won’t be able to afford their retirement. (WaPo, 1/12)

- The area between Navy Yard and Petworth, aka the Green Line Corridor, is expected to drive growth in the District, due to an influx of new residents and businesses that have come to that area over the last decade. (Examiner, 1/12)
- A recent survey by Pew shows that two-thirds of Americans see “strong conflicts” between the rich and the poor, suggesting that income inequality is the greatest cause of tension in American society. (NY Times, 1/11)
EDUCATION
- Fairfax public schools superintendent Jack Dale has proposed a $2.4 billion budget, a nine percent increase over the current budget. The proposal would allow for a the largest raises for teachers since 2008. (WaPo, 1/12)
- TIME magazine included D.C. Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson in its list of 12 education activists to watch in 2012. (TIME, 1/11)
NATIONAL SERVICE | The budget of the Corporation for National and Community Service’s inspector general’s office was cut by 48 percent in the 2012 spending bill approved by Congress. The office has warned that without more funds it will have to lay off three quarters of its staff and curtail its oversight activities. (Chronicle, 1/12)
