SAFETY NET | WG member World Bank has awarded $100K to strengthen nonprofits in Prince George’s County, Maryland (wire, 6/22) – “could not come at a better time.” Prince George’s County has the highest foreclosure rate in Maryland. Its nonprofit safety-net providers face “exponential demand for services in a time of dwindling donations.”

Meanwhile, Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s CEO thinks that “mergers are expensive and disruptive,” preferring to instead ”let the marketplace work.” Okay, mergers are not a magic cure-all, but the marketplace? That has nothing to do with nonprofit effectiveness. Are we satisfied if the best fundraisers thrive regardless of their impact?

The Post article about gangs is an interesting one. When will we learn that we can’t legislate good behavior, it has to be taught. Organizations like LAYC get it. Young people need activities that are both recreational and meaningful and adults cannot continue to be scared to deal with young people. WE need to recognize when we disconnect and figure out what we must do to connect. If we don’t we will have Hell to pay!
